When Should I Choose a Robotic Case Packer Over Other Types?

There are situations that you are better to use robotic case packer:

  • On production lines with insufficient automation, a robotic case packer can directly replace manual labor.
  • When products have irregular shapes that cannot be neatly arranged.
  • When there is a wide variety of products.
Under What Circumstances Should I Not Choose a Robotic Case Packer?

Of course, if your budget is limited, or if your production line only involves packaging a single product type, a robotic case packer may not be necessary.

Moreover, it is also not required for situations with higher speed production. If your production line runs too fast, a robotic case packer may not be able to keep up with that pace; in such cases, a traditional mechanical case packer is the better choice.

Do Robotic Case Packers Require a Lot Of Maintenance?

In fact, robotic case packers are easy to maintain and do not require frequent inspections or cleaning. Routine maintenance mainly involves checking the tightness of suction cups or grippers, lubricating the conveyor system, and cleaning the sensors. Compared to traditional case packers, their maintenance intervals can be somehow extended.

Does a Robotic Case Packer Handle Box Opening?

Generally speaking, a robotic case packer is designed specifically for picking up and packing products. In the actual production line, it must be integrated with machines such as box openers and case sealers to perform a complete packaging operation.

Does Your Robotic Case Packer Support Customization?

Yes, Neocarton has a dedicated R&D team to support your customization needs. We will design suitable grippers or suction cups based on your specific product dimensions and packaging requirements. Then, we will design the equipment structure and vision system to ensure precise positioning according to the conditions of your production line.

What is a Robotic Case Packer?

In terms of its composition and operation, a robotic case packing machine can’t be simply described as a single robot performing the whole task of packing cases. In fact, it is a complete intelligent automated system, which consists of various components, including a robotic arm, a control unit, and a vision system.

During actual work, all of its components will move in coordination to complete the whole case packing process. The digital drive system enables more precise packing and packaging, greatly enhancing your factory’s automation level and production efficiency, thereby supporting your projects.

How Does a Robotic Case Packer Work?

First, your previously packaged bagged or bottled products are transported via a conveyor system to the area where they will be placed into cartons.

Next, the robot’s vision inspection system will identify the product layout and arrange the products before picking them up, in order to make the placement more smoother.

Then, your robotic case packer will pick up the products by suction cups or grippers. The motion will be completed at a specific angle and appropriate force. So the products can be specifically placed inside the boxes.

Once the packing is complete, the filled boxes are automatically conveyed to the next station, where a case sealer and palletizer perform the final sealing and prepare the boxes for shipment.

Components Of a Robotic Case Packer

Robot Body

The robot body mainly relies on servo motors to perform actions such as gripping and handling. Once powered, the robot body conducts the movement in specific directions and at specific angles through various axes that are distributed across its joints.

These axes are responsible for movements such as rotation of the robot’s base, extension and retraction of the arm, and wrist rotation. According to the number of these axes, we divide the robotic case packers into three-axis, four-axis, and six-axis models.

Vision System

The primary function of a robotic case packer’s vision system is to identify and locate products. This allows the machine to pick them up and place them in the designated positions within the box.

These vision systems are typically equipped with high precision cameras and essential image processing algorithms, enabling more accurate object localization.

Conveyor System

The conveying system is the component of the robotic case packer responsible for transporting work pieces and products. Its operations are typically performed using suction cups or grippers, and can be customized to meet your specific needs.

4 Axis Robotic Case Packer vs 6 Axis Robotic Case Packer

Properties 4 Axis Robotic Case Packer 6 Axis Robotic Case Packer
Flexibility Moderate, it is suitable for packing standard shaped products Better, it can handle complex and irregular shaped products.
Movement directions X,Y,Z linear movement and simple rotation(up and down, left and right, back and forth) X,Y,Z and more movement angles, as well as the rotation of its wrist
Speed Faster Slower
Cost Lower Higher
Applications Regular shaped products in food, beverage and so on. Complex shaped products in electrical, medical and personnel care areas.

When choosing between these two types of robotic case packers, you should also consider the specific conditions of your factory.

If your factory needs to handle high speed case packing of a single product in large batches, a 4-axis robotic case packer will be enough to ensure the efficiency and accuracy. On the other hand, If your factory handles multiple SKUs, a 6-axis robotic case packer will offer greater flexibility in product changeovers and packing operations.

Robotic Case Packer Vs Traditional Case Packers

What are the Different Types Of Traditional Case Packers?

Unlike robotic case packers, common traditional case packers generally include wrap around, top loading, and side loading models. Compared to robotic case packers, their packaging process also involves opening the cartons, loading and unloading the goods, and transporting them. While the robotic packaging equipment are more focused on the gripping and packing operations.

Comparison Between Robotic Case Packer And Traditional Case Packers

Comparison factors Robotic case packer Traditional case packer
Automation level Higher Lower, it may need manual assistance
Flexibility Higher Lower
Speed 10-40 cases/ minute Faster
Cost Higher Lower
Applications Multi SKUs situations Stable production line with single type of products

How To Choose a Proper Robotic Case Packer?

Pay Attention to the Control System Configuration

When selecting a robotic case packing system, you should focus on the performance of its control system. We recommend verifying whether its PLC system is from an internationally renowned brand before making a purchase. Actually, this is the quickest way to ensure its performance stability.

Pay Attention to the Equipment Payload

The payload and reach of the robotic case packing equipment are essential parameters you need to consider, too. Reach refers to the range of motion of the robotic arm, which determines whether it can place products into your cartons.

Payload refers to the maximum weight of products the robot can handle in a single operation. payload determines whether it can meet your packing needs. However, it is important to note that a higher payload is not necessarily better. If your products are not heavy, purchasing a high payload robotic case packer will be a waste of money.
